The Volunteer Services Program in Miami-Dade County is a cooperative effort
initiated by the Miami-Dade County Health Department. The Dade County Medical
Association, community programs, private organizations and a diverse group of
individual health care professionals provide a support base for this program.
The volunteer program is extremely cost effective in increasing healthcare
access. It extends state sovereign immunity protection to health care professionals
and others who provide free health care services to the poor through contractual
agreements with the state.
Corporate contracted providers and partners have joined forces with the Florida Department of Health to provide vital professional health care services that benefit children and families who would otherwise not receive the needed treatment and care. Student interns and residents also play a vital role in the provision of health services in public health.
Since the implementation of the program at Miami-Dade County Health
Department, the number of volunteers has grown from 227 to 1,947,
the number of patients visits has increased from 115 to over 50,266,
and the number of patient services has increased from 3,750 to 121,102,
representing a savings to the State of Florida of over $25 million.
