Introduction

The Special Immunization Program (SIP) works hard to meet the mission and the vision of the Miami-Dade County Health Department by protecting the community from vaccine preventable diseases. Our Program provides immunization services throughout Miami-Dade County by:

· Investigating all reports of suspected rash illnesses as it pertains to vaccine preventable diseases
· Monitoring and tracking all vaccine preventable diseases
· Administering free immunizations to children between the ages of 2 months through 18 years of age
· Administering immunizations at a cost to adults 19 years of age and older
· Administering immunizations at a cost to adults who are traveling outside of the United States borders
· Providing various informational and educational programs centered around vaccines and the importance of being protected against vaccine preventable diseases
· Participating in health-related events sponsored by concerned partners sharing a common focus of a healthy community
· Undertaking the role of the health advocate and resource liaison to area private providers concerning immunization issues and guidelines

Our goals are:

· Control/ eliminate vaccine preventable diseases for residents and visitors of Miami-Dade County

· Provide barrier-free immunizations and education for infants, children and adults

· Provide education/ information to parents or guardians on the importance of vaccines and the on time reception of vaccines to adults and their children through various initiatives

· Educate/ monitor private and public sectors and provide consultative screening of immunization records along with vaccine handling and storage techniques

· Provide ongoing surveillance of vaccine preventable diseases reported in Miami-Dade County

As the local representative of the State of Florida Department of Health’s Bureau of Immunization, SIP was established in 1963 to protect the residents and visitors of Miami-Dade from disease. This is accomplished by taking measures to control/eliminate the spread of vaccine preventable diseases through education, vaccine administration, surveillance and monitoring. Most of the community knows SIP for the immunization clinics where vaccines are administered to children between the ages of 0 months through 18 years old. They also know of us when it’s the Back-to-School time of year and parents are attempting to do all that needs to be done to have their children ready for the new school year. This is done at our various local clinics that are permanent sites spread throughout Miami-Dade County.

However, SIP does more than just operate immunization clinics. SIP has several initiatives that center around providing education and information to our clients about the importance of protecting our community by immunizing our children and adults from vaccine preventable diseases as well as providing assessment and monitoring services. These include:

- Educating mothers after delivery while in hospital (Hospital Based Maternal/Infant Education Program).

- Assessing and reviewing the medical providers who participate in the Vaccine for Children Program (VFC) whereby feedback is provided to ensure that children are immunized on time and appropriately (Pocket of Need Program, and the CASA/AFIX Initiative).

- Providing immunizations as well as record assessments and 680-issuance to parents/guardians of children between the ages of 2 months through 18 years old at non-traditional sites throughout Miami-Dade (Health Fairs, National Infant Immunization Week Campaign, and the Mobile Van Unit).

- Auditing 680 (blue forms) at area daycares, Head Start Programs, preschools and public schools (Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade) to ensure that the children’s immunizations are up-to-date; to refer children to their medical provider if not up-to-date and/or provide/arrange health fair at facility to immunize child (Record Auditing Initiative).

- Investigating and monitoring for vaccine preventable diseases (Vaccine Preventable Disease Surveillance and Investigation Program).

- Monitoring and educating hospitals, mothers and medical providers on Hepatitis B disease (Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program).

- Managing and maintaining the computer database that contain the immunization records of children and adults immunized by SIP and some local partners and reminding/recalling clients for due/overdue immunizations (Immunization Registry – Florida SHOTS and the Immunization Module).

- Providing immunization services and education/information to adults geared towards the control/elimination of the spread of Influenza and Pneumonia diseases, general adult health and protecting travelers from vaccine preventable diseases (Adult Influenza and Pneumococcal Campaigns, National Adult Immunization Week Campaign, Adult Supplemental Program, Adult Health and the Travel Clinic).

- Maintaining and managing complete vaccine stock for the local Health Department immunization clinics and representing the BOI VFC Program as the local emergency supplier to medical providers who participate in the VFC Program (Vaccine Inventory Management and Accountability Program).

- Housing and maintaining the field staff of the BOI who are responsible for educating medical providers who are new participants in the VFC Program; assessing, educating and providing feedback to medical providers on immunization services and vaccine management and representing the BOI as consultants to both the local Health Department and participating medical providers in the VFC Program.
